Quote(s) of Note

"A lot of people worry about the "wear and tear" on furnishings. I feel its more a matter of people treating the things that surround them with respect."

"You want rooms to be usable and friendly."

"Forget the floor plans. Arrange the furniture where it is the most comfortable and will look best."

...Not one but three quotes for you today and they all come from Albert Hadley. The American king of Interior Design has doled out so much excellent decorating advice, I felt obliged to share several examples... :) And how can you not love his rooms? Classic, elegant and cosy, sure. But most importantly I think, timeless.

Happy Friday!

Clever Colour Combo: Black White & Lemon

Although this isn't quite what I would call "my style", (I tend to favour softer colours) I must say I really like the thought of a black and white hallway with zesty pops of lemon or lime. The room in the picture above looks so clean and crisp; I imagine my mood would lift just by passing through... But should something a little less stark be desired, then how about throwing some cobalt blue into the mix? Chic and pleasingly unexpected, don't you think?

Beauty on a Tuesday: Cleansing Oils

So have you ever tried cleansing your skin with oil? (If Yes, this post might prove boring to you :) If No, read on...

Oil as a topical treatment often gets a bad rep; if you've got an oily complexion already, the last thing you {probably} want to do is adding more "grease", right? However, many experts believe that using a quality oil can be one of the most effective yet gentle ways to deep cleanse your skin. Regular soaps and face washes often work to remove skins natural oil barrier, and it reacts by producing excess oil to protect itself, which can lead to a shiny T-zone, enlarged pores, or acne.

The main benefit of using a cleansing oil is believed to be that skin feels "fed" {and thus does not need to overproduce oil}. And because of its consistency, oil also has the unique ability to sink deep into pores, ridding them of dirt and build up, leaving you with a clear, well balanced complexion.

When washing with an oil, the technique required is a little different, but most brands come with instructions on the packaging that are easy to follow. The ones I have tried have all looked something like this:

Massage the oil all over face and neck. Add a warm washcloth and press for a few seconds {to open pores}. Repeat, then close pores by pressing a cold washcloth to face.

I have found this little evening routine to be very relaxing , and I like that most face oils serve as a "one step solution" (no makeup remover necessary). Right now I am loving Shu Uemura's Skin Purifying Beauty Oil. This product was invented by the brand's founder some sixty years ago and early devotees are said to have included Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor... And if it was good enough for them... :)

Other good options could be Shiseido Ultimate Cleansing Oil, Lancome Huile Douceur, or Bobbi Brown Cleansing Oil . You might also want to check out the award winning Eve Lom Cleanser (which has had a cult following in Europe for years.) This product is strictly speaking not an oil, but the usage /effect of the "balm" is very similar.

Two things to ♥

A Rock Crystal Lamp that would serve well as a decorative object and provide stylish lighting. I imagine that chunk of crystal must sparkle very prettily when the lamp is lit... And wouldn't this wallpaper {with its wonderful print of sketched chairs} work beautifully as an accent wall in a small kitchen, guest-bath or foyer?

I hope your weekend was everything you had wished for it to be...
Can you believe today marks the beginning of the end of April 2010?! Time just flies, doesn't it? ...Remember to breathe (deeply), laugh (often and readily) and play with total abandon. Xx

Style File: Easy Elegance

I love a room like this - pure, simple and not overdone, yet filled with indications that sophisticated living is going on. As is so often the case, it's all in the details; notice that the walls are not white but a very, very light pink. And that fluffy throw casually left on the chair lends a crucial touch of cozy.  I think it must be the wonderful white light from the window combined with all those pale pastels that give this space its almost ethereal quality... Dreamy.

Beauty on a Tuesday: In-home Spa

It's raining in L.A. today... In my book, bad weather is the perfect excuse to stay in and do some DIY beauty treatments; no worries if you are out of your favourite products - provided you have got just a few staples in your pantry - you can make your own. For instance, if I wanted to make good use of some of the oranges we picked up at the Farmers Market, I could try this super simple Heavenly Honey Citrus Mask recipe found at Marie Claire.com.

A honey-and-orange-based mask that is a quick fix to give your face an organic healthy glow.

1. Combine three tablespoons of orange juice with half a cup of honey

2. Apply to the face and leave on for half an hour

3. Rinse with lukewarm followed by cool water, then moisturize

Variation: Add half a mashed banana for a thicker, more moisturizing mask.

See, easy as one two three. Personally,  I like to start my little "spa sessions" by lighting a scented candle or two to set the mood... For optimum results I then cleanse, exfoliate and steam my face before applying the mask - just like the professionals do...And speaking of, one can take the whole endeavour a step further by putting some whale song on the ipod. (Though this is is totally optional and may easily be substituted with Enya) Finally, it's good to sit back while the mask does it's magic, relaxing in a moment of complete(sp)ahhhh. :)

Sunday, Funday

Love that the stems are still on the oranges. You don't see that in Sweden...

What's under here?

I got some of those...

...and some of those. (No, that's not my hand!)

Sean, Moses and I took the 10 minute stroll to our local Farmers Market last weekend. It's such a lovely way to while away a Sunday morning and the fresh lunch that awaits upon returning home [with all those organic goodies] is just an added bonus. We got some amazing locally grown oranges and lemons, the most delicious strawberries, a jar of marinated olives and, of course, bunches of flowers.

Now, how is that for good advice?  And speaking of [good advice], after having read this article, I  suddenly feel compelled to shut down the computer - at least for the afternoon...

Beauty on a Tuesday

We are well into April and by now I think it's safe to say that spring has officially sprung! This is such a wonderful time of year; with it comes lovely warm breezes, birdsong and blossoms and picnics and sunshine and sandals and ice cream and... short skirts. :)

Are your legs ready?

Tips for Skin Brushing *

To brush your skin, start at you feet and sweep up the legs in long, light brisk movements. All skin brushing movements should be towards the heart, to encourage the return of blood and encourage lymphatic flow.

Pay particular attention to the cellulite-prone areas like your thighs. Brush your abdomen with a circular clock-wise motion. Brush your arms with an upward motion, moving towards the heart. The whole processshould take two to five minutes.

Don’t be too rough. Overbrushing causes the skin to turn red and become irritated

Do it first thing in the morning, when the increased blood flow will help wake you up, or before you take a shower.

Besides combating cellulite and rough skin, dry brushing can be beneficial to your overall well-being. If you would like to read more, check out this extensive article.

Two things to ♥

Lemon Meringue Cupcakes that look too good to be true. (Thankfully, the recipe can be found right here:) And  Pretty, witty, stylish prints by mid-century illustrator Lora Lamm.

In my third year of college, I  had to start every week with an early morning class on 16th century literature; a thought that was anything but encouraging. I must have looked pretty glum boarding my bus on occasion, because there was one driver who would inevitably greet me with a cheery "Chin up doll, only four more 'til the weekend!" It has remained my Monday motto ever since.
